Congratulations to Bolles’
own Ryan Murphy, who has now surpassed five-time Olympic gold
medalist Aaron Peirsol as the fastest 13 & 14 year old 100
meter backstroker in American history! Ryan broke his ninth
career National Age Group record in his home pool at this
weekend’s TYR Summer Classic when he stroked his way to a
57.76 finish in the 100 Backstroke.
Peirsol’s record had stood
since 1998, though Murphy has been chasing it for the last year. He
missed the record by just six-tenths of a second at last
year’s Junior National Championships and was just five-tenths
off the record at this summer’s Santa Clara
International. Just one week shy of his 15th
birthday, the TYR Summer Classic was Ryan’s last chance at
the mark. Not only did he swim two-tenths faster than Peirsol
had at his age over 100 meters, he just narrowly missed taking the
Olympian’s 13 & 14 record in the 200 meter Backstroke
with a 2:02.86. Peirsol’s best at that age was 2:02.78,
putting Ryan a mere .08 off the mark.
Ryan now owns a long course NAG
backstroke record in the 10 & Under, 11 & 12, and 13 &
14 age groups.
